I can be anywhere I want-
-as long as I go to school, come home, and stay home
I can drive as soon as I want-
-as long as I wait until I’m eighteen to even get a permit
I can date anytime I want-
-as long as I turn sixteen before accepting a date
I can date anyone I want-
-as long as my parents already know him and he’s my age
I can talk to anyone I want-
-as long as I know them already or Mom forces us to be friends
I can stand up for anything I want to-
-as long as it doesn’t go against my parents’ rules and ideals
I can write anything I want to-
-as long as it fits everyone else’s formats
I can have any opinion I want-
-as long as it’s the opinion everyone wants me to have
I can say anything I want-
-as long as it’s not controversial and I’m not swearing
I can dress any way I want-
-as long as it’s not rebelliously expressive
I can be as rebellious as I want-
-as long as I don’t express it and remain an outer conformist
I can practice any religion I want-
-as long as I’m Presbyterian Christian, like my parents
I can create anything I want-
-as long as my parents see it and ask me probing questions about it
I can feel however I want-
As long as I appear happy, cheerful, and polite
I can do whatever I want in my free time-
-as long as my parents don’t ask me to do something else
I can feel however I want-
-as long as I keep everything negative bottled up and appear happy
I can keep it like that for as long as I want-
-as long as feelings of resentment don’t build up, which they always do
I can express how I really feel anytime-
-as long as it’s to people who I’ve never met, but know how to listen better than anyone.

So really, as you can see, there are no rules to this endless, twisting tangle.
But it’s the rules that don’t exist that are hardest to conform to.
And I thank everyone here for helping me out whenever I need it.
This is dedicated to Autumn, who is the sweetest person here,
And who helped me through when I felt choked by nonexistent wires –
Thank you so much, ~AutumnJoy.
i wrote this after finishing the Mysterious Benedict Society. there is a part that lists the "non-rules" of an academy, similarly to how i state the non-rules of my life here.

incredible. And yeah, a lot of the paradoxes of that book were really interesting.
